Styling Tips for Every Type of Wedding

Wedding season is upon us, and whether you're attending a glamorous black-tie affair or a breezy beach ceremony, the right outfit (and shoes!) will help you celebrate in style. From formal elegance to casual chic, here’s your go-to guide for what to wear to every type of wedding. Plus we've tapped into a few stylists in our community to give their advice. Get ready to be comfortable, chic and dance party ready!

First and foremost according to Lora LaPratt, Founder of Shopping Girl XOXO "Before selecting your wedding guest outfit, always check the dress code first. More than ever, couples are including specific dress requests on invitations, so be sure to honor their wishes. You wouldn’t want to show up in a black gown when the theme calls for bright florals!"

Black-Tie Wedding: Elegance at Its Finest

A black-tie wedding calls for full-on glamour. Think floor-length gowns, elegant jumpsuits, or sophisticated midi dresses in rich colors and luxe fabrics. A sleek, fitted gown in navy, red, or classic black. Shoe pairing classic pump in black patent leather, nude or midnight maroon for a timeless touch. Accessories: Statement jewelry, a chic clutch, and a bold lip complete the look.

Beach Wedding: Light & Breezy

Beach weddings call for flowy fabrics, light colors, and breathable styles to keep you cool and stylish in the sun. Outfit idea, a flowy maxi dress in light blue, blush, or yellow. Shoe choice a champagne, silver or nude color for effortless elegance and all-day comfort. Accessorize the look with a woven clutch, dainty silver jewelry, and soft curls for a beachy vibe.

Garden / Barn Wedding: Romantic & Effortless

A garden wedding is all about embracing nature with floral prints, soft hues, and airy silhouettes. We love the idea of a midi dress with subtle floral prints. Or try a midi wrap dress. We love a block heel for this occassion in a soft pastel or metallic tone to complement the natural setting. Accessorize with a straw clutch, pearl earrings or gold studs for a touch of timeless romance.

Stephanie Grabow, founder of SG Style Collective says the key to dressing for a wedding is "Lean into your joy." We love it! "When planning a wedding outfit, think about words like "happy," "joyful," "celebration," and "elegant." Stephanie says, "Weddings are perfect for indulging your inner romantic; wear that dreamy floral dress and embrace your colorful jewel tone fantasy."

Lastly Lora wants us all to remember that "Equally important to the dress code is choosing an outfit you feel comfortable in. You'll be wearing it for hours—sitting, dining, and dancing—so prioritize ease of movement and confidence. The last thing you want is to be distracted by discomfort instead of enjoying the celebration!"
